MDFAWL’S VIRTUAL JAMBOREE

Thank you MDFAWL for featuring the Virtual Jamboree in its summer newsletter highlighting how your work has benefitted our community during these challenging times.

 

The third “Virtual Jamboree” program benefitted numerous programs including Dade Legal Aid. Thanks to MDFAWL’s generosity, ten families were selected and received generous baskets and essential. Dade Legal Aid summer intern and FIU 2L Yanina Onyewenjo worked with the MDFAWL Pro Bono Committee and Dade Legal Aid Children’s Attorneys Kristen Feuer and Nikki Weisburd to identify the most needy clients and families. Included among those were teenage mothers, needy families, and a 2020 high school graduate. MDFAWL sponsored individualized care package deliveries to each client in need, including fresh food, personal hygiene items, and essential baby supplies for the young mothers. The 2020 high school graduate also received the Nike sneakers of her choice and participated in a graduation car parade celebrating her accomplishment, with the support of Dade Legal Aid and the Voices for Children Foundation. “We are beyond grateful to MDFAWL, Amber, Carolina, and Yanina for bringing such joy and happiness to so many deserving families and individuals further impacted by Covid-19,” said Ladis. As said by one of the recipients, “You are angels!” The MDFAWL Pro Bono Committee was proud to transition the Annual Jamboree Event into several virtual events that gave back to youth in need and to bring much needed joy to young people and families experiencing difficulties during the pandemic. Although virtual, the Jamboree’s mission remains the same: to recruit pro bono attorneys to assist young people in foster care in every aspect of their lives, from legal representation to serving as role models and inspiring the next generation.
