Heirs’ Property Protection Project

In 2025, Dade Legal Aid launched its Heirs’ Property Initiative to serve qualifying residents in need of legal assistance to resolve and prevent heirs’ property-related legal issues in the neighboring communities of Overtown and Liberty City.  Services include clearing titles through the filing and litigating of matters in Probate Court and Civil Court proceedings, drafting and preparation of wills, conducting brief services, providing litigation, partition of deeds, and other remedies available. This program will provide legal protections by offering a large number of residents Living Wills, Last Will and Testaments, and other legal documents needed for proper distribution of possessions and property at death. Services are free for eligible persons living in homes that may not be titled in their own names, rather, homes titled in the names of deceased parents or grandparents, who have passed down the property without clear ownership causing confusion amongst family members. The goals are to ensure the proper passing of generational wealth for clients facing heirs’ property problems and to build a sustainable foundation for their families.
